'Tis the Season Way Too Early For This Pt 2: Ho Ho Homosexual

ok ok ok ok.

i know it's not even Thanksgiving yet, and i really shouldn't be thinking about Christmas, but c'mon! Kristine W and Christmas music? forget the brown paper packages and the schnitzel with noodles, those are two of my favorite things.

i had to pounce on it the day it was released and i urge you to do the same before it's sold out (plus, please notice, that she'll autograph the CD for basically the price of a small coffee at Starbucks).

What Have You Done Today...Pt.2

Stephen: so, are we marching with your company in the parade?
CawfeeGuy: i dunno...
S: well, why not?
CG: i've never marched before...and i don't know anyone...
S: so? I'll be there with you and afterward you will know people.

well duh.

Yesterday's News

i have a unique talent, it seems, for catching wind of and embracing a trend, months (sometimes years) after it's out of style. Fashion, music, books, tv shows, and movies; if it was popular say, 6 months or a year ago, chances are i'm just finding out about it.

many are the time i'll see someone wearing a cool shirt or nice sneakers, ask where they got them, and then find out the store hasn't sold them in months. recently i went to Best Buy to try and find a couple of CD's and DVDs, only to be told that that they had been out of print for years.

take, for instance, my recent brush with the wonderful world of the iTunes Store; after finally uploading my rather extensive library of music to BTZ, most of which is stuff i've been listening to, in one form or another (read: cassette or homemade CD), for years, i decided to embrace the idea of finding new music on iTunes. i typed in "Rufus Wainwright" 'cuz i know he has more b-sides and odd tracks than anyone else in my library, and was not disappointed. amongst the CD's i already owned were some tracks he'd recorded for both Brokeback Mountian soundtrack and a Hedwig and the Angry Inch tribute CD (which has awesome covers by Cyndi Lauper and Fred Schneider, both of which i downloaded last night). All three Rufus tracks are amazing, and i highly recommend you download them; chances are, though, you already have and you've been sitting there shaking your head thinking "jeez CB, i've been listening to La Wainwright's cover of Origin of Love for years! where y'been" but that is precisely the problem...somehow i missed it.

my friends (namely Jenn and John) have been laughing about this odd phenomenon, independently of each other, for years. Jenn still laughs about the time i dressed as Harry Potter to go to the Village Halloween parade, six months before the HP explosion hit the US; it was the one and only time i was ahead of the curve. John, in particular will give me music or a movie and tell me, with 100% certainty, to take it home and listen to it because in 6 months i'll love it. i used to fight him on it, thinking that my musical tastes were slightly different than his, that i was an independent listener; but 99.9% of the time he's right. it happened with Kristine W and Natasha Bedingfield; when i he 1st told me about the latter, i was all "whatever another Anastacia white-girl-with-soul-diva-wanna-be"; 6 months later i was begging him to find me more of her remixes.

i'm lucky enough to have friends on the cutting edge; people who always know where to go, what to listen to and how to dress. it must be so terribly tiring, keeping up with the latest and newest in music, clothes and movies; personally, i prefer to let them do all the work and call myself "retro"; people have been doing that for years.

Carols at the Spinnet

Ok, as promised here it is...my list of the creme de la creme of Christmas listenin' guaranteed to make your tree shine a little brighter and your peppermint stick taste a little sweeter!

Top 10 11 12 13 14 Must Own Christmas CDs (in no particular order):

  1. Cool Yule (Bette Midler): this is one of the best, all around, Christmas CDs ever. there really isn't one song on it that isn't...DIVINE. the gem of the bunch, though is her cover of the off-beat, yet perenial favorite Melle Kalikimaka, which you may remember from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. every time i hear that song it gets me in the mood!
  2. a Christmas Album (Barbra Streisand): yeah, i'm that gay. i've been listening to this CD since i'm born. mom had it on vinyl (remember vinyl?) and we'd listen to it endlessly at christmas time, while making cookies and cooking. if you can't bring yourself to go into Best Buy and pick the whole CD, then at least do a bump of your favorite upper and download Jingle Bells?, you owe it to yourself and to Babs.
  3. Merry Christmas (Mariah Carey): by far and above, one of the most consistantly awesome and timeless christmas albums ever released. Mariah really turns it out with true holiday spirit, style and fun! Plus, you know you can't go without hearing All I Want for Christmas Is You at least once a season, so why bother? buy this CD!
  4. Christmas Jollies (the Salsoul Orchestra): it's Christmas. It's disco. It's Chrisco. this has to be one of the hardest albums to find, anywhere. when i worked at Sam Goody, people would come in and try to order it in August. i never understood what al the hype was about till one of the girls i work with, brought it in last year. It's worth every penny that you'd pay on Ebay!
  5. Merry Christmas (and Have a Nice Life): the perfect mix of traditional Christmas songs with non-traditional arangements, and original songs (a couple of which were produced by Junior!). again, if you can't bring yourself to buy the whole CD, you absolutely need to DL the Christmas Conga. it's so good, it'll change your life.
  6. Home for Christmas: Broadway Cares (Various Broadway stars): this CD will work your Christmas pussy and leave you gagging for more. amazing performances by Roger Bart, Gary Beach, Jane Krakowski, Daphne Ruben-Vega and more. the jewel in its resplendant crown is Liza and Alan Cumming's rendition of Baby It's Cold Outside. it's sure to be a holiday favorite for years to come; you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll swear that Liza doesn't have her teeth in.
  7. a Charlie Brown Christmas (Vince Guaraldi Trio): you've seen the cartoon, you've loved the cartoon; you need to own the CD too. light, jazzy and ambient, it strikes the perfect mood while decorating the tree or watching the Yule Log.
  8. Christmas Stays the Same (Linda Eder): another all-around-fantascit CD, Linda really has the perfect voice for a Christmas songs. it's the perfect combination of big band jazziness and St. Pat's worthy orchestral numbers. there's even the most wonferful Lion King-esque arangement of the Do You Hear What I Hear! in the last song on the CD, the Bells of St. Paul's,you can almost see her running through London in the snow, scaring the pigeons in Trafalgar Square looking for her elusive ex, so you don't seem to mind that it has nothing to do with Christmas!
  9. Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow EP (Michael Buble`): it's only 4 songs, but they're all amazing! Mikey really has come through with the perfect sampling for those of us who get moist with his every syllable.
  10. a Very Special Christmas volumes 1, 2 & 3 (Various Artists): ok ok ok it's three cd's , but i tend to think of them as one since i like about 1/3 of each CD and have smooshed them all into one. there are the most timeless of renditions of all your Christmas faves on these CDs: Madonna's Santa Baby, the Pointer Sister's Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Aretha Franklin's O Christmas Tree, and Chris Cornell's Ave Maria. yup...Chris Cornell...the Ave Maria.
  11. A Very Rosie Christmas and Another Rosie Christmas (Rosie O'Donnell and Various Stars): did you know Rosie could sing? Well she can't, but you really don't mind when she's singing along with the Dixie Chicks, Jessicca Simpson, Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan and Barry Manilow (and about a doezen more people). Even better than Rosie's duets are the songs she doesn't sing on, by Darren Hayes, Macy Gray and Elton John. the two must have songs are, by far and above Rosie and Ricky Martin's Aye Aye Aye It's Christmas and my guilty pleasure It's Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) with Cher. so ridiculous that your chestnuts will roast themselves.
  12. WCBS-FM's Ultimate Christmas Albums Vol. 1-5 (Various Artists): if there's a Christmas song that was even remotely popular between 1950 and 1990 it's on this set. These are a must have for anyone looking for hard to find one-hit-christmas-wonders like Wham's Last Christmas, the Waitresses' Christmas Wrapping, , Eartha Kitt's Santa Baby and tons of others including one of my favorite songs ever, Lou Monte's Dominic the Donkey.
  13. Elton John's Christmas Party (various artists): the Petshop Boys, Rufus Wainwright, the Pretenders, Joss Stone and Kate Bush. can you think of any reason not to own this gem? me neither. pick it up at Starbucks.
  14. My Kind of Christmas (Christina Aguliera): another all around good CD with a really impressive selection of original, traditional and religious songs. best of all, the CD has a bonus Thunderpuss mix of the Christmas Song...for those of you into that sort of thing.

5 Must Have Christmas Songs i suggest you DL:

  1. Christmas Wrapping (the Spice Girls): this was on their last CD single, Forever. not as good as the orignal (see #12, above), but fun and fabulous in it's own way! since the group has gone the way of Devo, you may as well try and DL it.
  2. O Holy Night (Victor Calderone mix) (Kristine W): christmas and club music? yes, my friend it's true. there's no better club diva than Kristine W; i suggest you hit up her website to get a copy of the Limited Edition CD single, which also features Mary Did You Know? another christmas club tune written by KW, herself.
  3. O Holy Night (Cher): dunno where i found this live track, but uber-bass Cher sounds like she's about 21 years old. so good, i get chills.
  4. Do They Know It's Christmas (Band Aid): ok, i actually found this on Now...Christmas, and spent 20 bucks for it, like 2 weeks ago. don't be a dummy, rip it from a friend or DL it yourself. it's harder to find than a straight guy at a Madonna concert.
  5. My Only Wish (Britney Spears): back when Britney wasn't skanky and whorish she released this ultra-sweet Christmas confection sure to melt your heart and put you ina diabetic coma! if you really feel like you need the original, it's on Platinum Christmas with other rarities by Christina Aguliera, Whitney Houston and Toni Braxton. personally, i wouldn't waste the $15.

Some Thoughts From Before I've Had Coffee (in no particular order)

  1. Junior Vasquez's 14 minute mix of Kristine W's Fly Again is so good that i'm surprised it hasn't been banned in 48 states.
  2. Maybe NJ isn't so bad...maybe...
  3. Cher needs to do another movie.
  4. Best Buy was sold out of Season 3 of the L Word, should i buy it somewhere else or just wait it out?
  5. we really need to find a photogapher.
  6. a honeymoon might be nice. maybe a gay cruise. nah they're too...cruisey...

Music Makes the People Come Together

Some thoughts on what's randomly playing on my MP3 Player from my as yet unnamed playlist...

  1. Stand Back (Stevie Nicks): i can't stand her, but i love this song. i have no idea what she's saying; it sounds like she's stuck in a wood-chipper.
  2. the Tide is High (Blondie): honestly, before their "comeback" Blondie could do no wrong. this song really is golden.
  3. Heart of Glass (Blondie): see #2
  4. I Would Die for You (Prince): i've always liked Prince, but Shithead was a majorly psychotic fan. it was terribly disturbing. i still listen to him now and again and thank Cher i'm with Stephen. :)
  5. Edge of Seventeen (Stevie Nicks): see #1 (i think it's just the chorus i like about this song; all the rest is unintelligible)
  6. Immature (Bjork): the lyrics to this song are awesome: "how could i be so immature to think that he could replace the missing elements in me? how extremely lazy of me!" say what you want about her, the bitch has a point.
  7. the Queen is Dead (the Smiths): ah the angst of Morrissey. whatever happened to him?
  8. She Bop (Cyndi Lauper): this was one of the very 1st albums i ever owned (on cassette!). i played it so much it wore out. it wasn't till, like 5 years ago that i realized what this song was about. that Cyndi! she was so naughty!
  9. Frankly, Mr Shankly (the Smiths): this song is SO f'n snotty and peppy!
  10. Take a Chance (ABBA): in college, Jenn and i used to sit in her car and she'd chant the "take a chance" part over and over again during this song. we always cracked up!
  11. Blue Monday (New Order): holy '80's Batman.
  12. Ask (the Smiths): *sigh* ah to be a buck-tooth girl in Luxemburg.
  13. Shine (Cyndi Lauper): the 1st time i heard this song was live, when she opened for Cher during the "Farewell Tour". i still get chills when i hear it. love her!
  14. No More (Jason Walker): holy crap. this song's lyrics are phenomonal and it was produced by Dynamix AND it was covered by Kristine W! the next time someone needs a Break-Up Mix or Anti-Valentines Day mix: this song is totally going on it.
  15. Because of You (Kelly Clarkson): ok i admit it, i jumped on the KC bandwagon. this song is so gut-wrenchingly well-done, with her plaintive and desperate sounding voice, that it's hard to resist. i still won't watch American Idol though.
  16. Everything She Wants (Wham!): yup i own Wham!, and i'm not ashamed. i love this song. she's a greedy bitch George! leave her and go back into the bushes!
  17. Voulez Vous (ABBA): this song is so campy and so fabulous.
  18. Paradise is Here [Junior's radio edit] (Cher): Cher and Junior is like chocolate and peanut-butter: fantastic separate, and mind-numbingly fabulous together.
  19. Love is a Groove (Cher): it's that noise at the begining of song that really gets me. it sound like she's playing bottles filled with water. i live for that noise. then she says "Kathmandu", and i know that she can do no wrong.
  20. Girlfriend in a Coma (the Smiths): (see #7) c'mon, who else could've written this song?
  21. the Sodom and Gomorrah Show (the Pet Shop Boys): this song is like a Vegas production number. i *heart* Neil Tennant.
  22. Faithfully [Valentin radio edit](Judy Torres): i usually hate covers, especially when i really like the original, but this one is phenomonal. she really makes it her own; incidentally, it's also a pretty kick-ass mix.
  23. Regret (New Order): i absolutely love the opening bars of this song. wow, New Order; where are they now?
  24. Mama Mia (ABBA): (see#17)
  25. How Soon Is Now? (the Smiths): this song is deffinitely in my top 5 for all time favorites.
  26. I Knew You Were Waiting for Me (George Michael and Aretha Franklin): this is the butchest i've ever heard him sound.
  27. Gloria (Laura Branigan): poor Laura; dead. yet, her song lives on and on and on
  28. Barracuda (Heart): this song always takes me back to Wednesdays at Barracuda; where we'd see the notoriously fabulous drag-queen: Shasta Cola. she tore the place up with this song.
  29. I Wanna Have Some Fun (Samantha Fox): so trashy, so slutty, such a one-hit-wonder that somehow had five.

ok, i'm mad busy now. there's no way i'll be able to post more. until tomorrow!

Nostalgia...Sorta...

i've had some time to kill today (thanks to our summer interns, my work day basically stops at 3pm; thanks kids!), so in my final hour of Friday i was looking at some of my past posts. think of this as either an Update show on Maury or one of those flashback episodes of the Golden Girls or Family Ties...

  1. the men's room at work: still a sewer. do grown men really need to stand in front of a toilet with their pants around their ankles to urinate? must they chit chat at the urinals like it was happy hour at the Toolbox?
  2. Babies Babies everywhere: stephen's sister gave birth, my sister-in-law is still preggers and so i my supervisor. also, one of my friends from college is in her 2nd trimester after a terrible ordeal with invitro fertilization.
  3. my brain tumor: i saw the audiologist a few months ago, i have minimal hearing loss in my right ear. in a few months i have to go back for another MRI and hearing test to compare to the last couple, to see if the tumor's grown and my hearing has gotten worse. short answer: everything is status quo. no worries :)
  4. my job: i still like my job alot, but i'm convinced i could be doing something else to help my fellow man. btw: volunteering organizations don't answer e-mails.
  5. my name: as some of you may have noticed, since turning the Big Three-Oh, i've changed my name to CawfeeGuy. if you hadn't noticed, SURPRISE!
  6. Our Commitment Ceremony: ok so we've booked the hall and the celebrant; we now need a DJ and a photographer. i'm also still looking for the perfect poem or song for the ceremony, too. i remain undaunted.
  7. the Next Blog button: does everyone in portugal have a fucking blog?
  8. Underoos: i'm still being teased about this **folds arms** i don't wanna talk about it.
  9. the Weather: it's been gorgeous here for the last week. let's keep it that way, i don't think i can survive another heatwave.
  10. Ethel Merman: hasn't left my MP3 player in days. she's been duking it out with Kristine W for diva of the week. I'm glad to be alive in the land of the living where there's no business like show business...

is there anything else i've missed?

10 Reasons Why Gay Marriage Is Wrong

i'm tired and more than a little bit stressed out; please excuse this blatant cop out:

01) Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

02) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

03) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

04) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

05) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britany Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

06) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.

07) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

08) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

09) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly ! forbid single parents to raise children.

10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans

"I used to run/I used to hide from love/But now, I'm satisfied/'Cause you showed me/That love could be/So good, so real and oh so right/So many things I used to let get in my way/Now I open up my arms and say hey/Lovin You/It's all I wanna do/For the rest of my life/This feels so right I'm/Lovin You/It's all I wanna do/For the rest of my days/'Cause I like the way I'm/Lovin You"~ Lovin You (Kristine W)

Lay Down the Boogie & Play That Funky Music till You Die...till You Die...

have you ever seen that commercial for one of the cellphone companies that lets you use your phone as an MP3 player? you see all these young, thin, gorgeous people of various ethnicities walking around town; their shadows appear behind them dancing while walking, then they get a call and both the waif and the waif's shadow are standing still. the call ends and the waif starts walking while their shadow busts a move. this morning, on the way into the building, i was that waif.

to be perfectly fair, i'm deffinitely neither young, thin, nor gorgeous, but standing in the elevator i was dancing like one of the Solid Gold Dancers or perhaps a Fly Girl...on the inside. Kristine, Junior and i were having a wonderful old time telling our respective audiences that we were glad to be "alive and in the land of the living"; there was glamour, there was drama, there was fabulousness. if the people with whom i shared the elevator could see what was going on inside of me, they would've hooted and hollered and (perhaps) started to stuff dollar bills in my hands, in my pockets, down the front of my shirt.

that's why i love my MP3 player: i am completely and totally addicted to music. before i had my MP3 player, i had a mini disc player, before that a DiscMan, before that a WalkMan, before that...i was in the womb. i was raised on music like other kids were raised on football or cartoons. i distinctly remember dancing around the house to South Pacific and West Side Story, with my mom (she had a stack of vinyl taller than i was at 5 years old). the radio was always on in our house, morning to night, tuned to the oldies station. i used to sit in our playroom for hours listening to Sesame Street's Singing in the Bathtub, over and over and over again. by the time i was ten i had songs commited to memory (but still didn't know my multiplication tables). i was hooked on Sheena Easton and Irene Cara. i remember playing the Sheena's Private Heaven cassette, lip-synching to Strut and Sugar Walls but obviously not knowing what the lyrics meant. i knew New Editions entire repetoire by heart, as well as the sound track to Flashdance. As i got older, music remained a staple of my development; i was well acquainted with Samantha Fox, Stacey Q, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna and any other cassettes my parents would buy me. Evenutally i was old enough to buy my own music and the 1st CD i bought was the B-52's Cosmic Thing. it was all downhill from there. my tastes began to broaden and i began to listen to everything: standards, alternative rock, pop and disco. music shaped my day and matched my mood. i felt attached to the Smiths and the Pet Shop Boys (they knew how i felt).Gloria Gaynor told me that no matter what, i would survive. Ella completley understood that i had "It Bad...and That Ain't Good". Cole Porter's lyrics were so debonaire and ripe with irony and class.

Here i am, 30 years later, and i am still completely hooked on music. it's like a drug i can't shake. in addition to my old favorites, i've recently (within the last 6 years) gained an affinity for club music. DJ's have completely revolutionized the face of music as we know it, bringing artists and songs to audiences that otherwise never would've encountered them. living proof: 10 years ago, there's no way i would've thought it possible that i would listen to anything even remotely resembling gospel music, now i can't go a day without Vernessa Mitchell or Kim English belting out how happy that there's a higher power in their life. if it wasn't for Junior Vasquez, Razor and Guido, i would never had heard them. Over the last couple of years i've found that club music actually keeps me going throughout the day; setting my pace and keeping me moving.

In light of the wedding and my brain tumor, i realize how terribly important music really is to me. i'm never without it, from the time i wake up till just before i go to bed. i'm aware that should i ever lose my hearing completely, i will be absolutely devastated because i will be unable to function without a soundtrack to my day. i recognize that, to me, the most important part of our wedding won't be the food or the flowers, it will be the mood set by the DJ or musician that we hire.

sitting here at my desk, Celine and i are telling our respective lovers (with the help of Thunderpuss) that we want to be needed like the air they breathe. my inner waif is dancing on his stage wearing skin tight (size 30) jeans and no shirt. all is right with the world.

"...It is the universe's way of saying stop, slow down, you move too fast. Listen to the music. Whoa whoa, listen to the music. Because music makes the people come together, it makes the bourgeois and the rebel. So come on people now, smile on your brother, everybody try to love one another. Because what the world needs now is love, sweet love. And I know that love is a battlefield, but boogie on reggae woman because you're gonna make it after all. So celebrate good times, come on. I've gotta stop I've gotta come to my senses i've been out riding fences for so long... oops i did it again... "~Ellen DeGenneres

Pea Brained

i have to write this quickly as my one day off has left my desk in complete shambles. sadly when i'm not here, my work is left in the oh-so-capable hands of Dingbat. it's terrible, i loathe taking vacation days or calling in sick because i know that when i come back it'll be double the work. i swear to god. in the words of my father, that woman "could fuck up a wet dream". Digression over. i went to the ENT yesterday and here's what happened:
he looked at the MRI film and the synopsis and concluded that whatever is in my head is roughly the size of a pea. he couldn't give a definitive diagnosis without the 2nd MRI (with the contrasting dye), so he told me to come back with those results. he stressed that i shouldn't be worried, though (at least not till they know precisely what the pea-sized item in my noggin is).
so untill June 1st, i'm not worrying, stressing or losing sleep over it. :)

Kristine W: the magic, the myth, the legend

have you heard of Kristine W? she's amazing. she's an absolutely outstanding songwriter and even plays the saxaphone on her CDs! she has about 20 club hits under her belt and is just an all around fantastic performer and person (a friend worked with her a few years ago at a Pride event and said she was too delightful for words). her lyrics are poingant and monving (I'll Be Your Light and The Wonder of It All) and often just plain old kick ass fabulous (Fly Again, Stronger, Lovin' You). She's been remixed by the best: Junior, Tony Moran, and Mac Quayle. check out her site: www.kristinew.com and i guarantee that you'll become a fan.
