It Can Get Better

A few weeks ago, a friend updated his Facebook status to say:

“I am so sick of all the ‘stop the hate. Together’ and associated ‘it gets better’ bullshit. Enough with the pussification of america. How about ‘sometimes it sucks’ and ‘stick up for youself’ and ‘don’t be a coward’ hate and bullying are a lot older than any of us and cannot be stopped. Teach independence, not cowardice”.

Naturally, I was outraged. A few weeks later, I posted a link to Unicorn Booty’s article on the suicide of Jamie Hubley with the comment “he shoulda just manned up, right” and his response was:

“Well, he did want to be a unicorn. Self cutting? Suicide blogs? Where’s mom and dad? Sad, yes, but necessary, no. I was the only out gay kid in HS and I got out and graduated in 3 years rather than taking a swan dive off a bridge. My point is, there are options other than suicide. Now it seems almost fashionable, which, in my opinion, only increases the level of cowardice of the act”.

again, I was outraged...but a little less so... See, on one hand he’s right. Where were this kid’s parents? Teachers? Didn’t his doctor/pediatrician notice the kid was cutting himself?

That said, I continued with the outrage…

Knitting Takes Balls

Last Thursday, I shared a 2 hour car ride to Long Island* with three straight guys; one was a (new) co-worker, the other was his brother-in-law and the 3rd a mutual friend of theirs. Don’t get me wrong, I was mad lucky that the brother-in-law worked close by and offered to pick us up. The two hour car ride, though, was spent with the three of them talking ‘sport’. Now, please don’t misunderstand: I am eternally grateful that I got the ride (and thanked the driver profusely). Had I not been with my co-worker, I’d have been totally screwed; I would’ve had to wait until the trains ran again at 11:30, since I don’t know how else to get to LI from DT Brooklyn. I’m also not complaining that I couldn’t join in the conversation; I was the odd man out. I don’t need to talk and actually am okay with being silent while other people talk around me; I was fine not engaging in the ball related chit-chat.

God Complex

I’m getting mighty pissed off that natural disasters and atrocities are constantly being blamed on The Gays. It seems we’re responsible for last weekend’s hurricane, last week’s earthquake, the butchered boy a month or so back; hell even 9/11. Everything bad, according to the Crazy Christers (and friends), is their god’s way of telling them that he’s pissed off at us; all this drama is his way of saying that DADT should remain, DOMA is A-OK and that New York is the new Sodom (ok…maybe that last one’s not that far of a stretch).

I'm Watching You, Watching Me, Watching You

So blogger has a feature where I can see how many times my blog was visited in a day/week/month or forever. i'm not going to lie; I’m kinda obsessed with it.

Elsewhere in the Blogverse

So, Blogger suggests blogs occasionally. On principle, I never look at them because I get really angry that they’ve never picked me (that i know of). I was so incredibly bored, today, that I was looking at what they consider "noteworthy" (it was either that or whip out my knitting, at my desk).
this one had me snickering for 45 minutes; this is one seriously funny chick.

People Are People, Right?

Where is all this hate coming from? I know it’s nothing new and it’s also nothing I haven’t touched upon, on this blog, before, but I’m really at a loss lately. There’s so much about the militant anti-LGBT movement that I just don’t understand; like the rationale of the Nazis and the Klan. My pink liberal brain just can’t quite comprehend what it is that one gets out of limiting the rights, freedoms and happiness of others. I don’t get how anyone can say that “the gays” want to “redefine marriage” when, in all actuality, most of us agree with the current definition: “two people, in a legally binding contract, joined together forever”; just not the interpretation of “two people”. The gays aren’t the ones who want to redefine it to only mean men and women marrying. I don’t understand how our marriage has any affect on anyone else’s life, but mine and my husband.

Quite honestly, I blame religion. The 1st thing you learn in almost all religious education is that only “believers” get into heaven; everyone else is doomed until they see the light. Non-believers are pitied, scorned and in extreme cases fought to the death. In a country built on freedom from religious persecution, you’d think we would be less apt to let religion have a hand in writing our laws. With the vitriol with which right-wing Christians and Catholics criticize Muslims for their hateful zeal, you’d think their anti-LGBT rhetoric would be less focused on cramming their faith and beliefs down the throats of non-believers. Most are so afraid of having any Muslim influence on our political system (read: the Birthers) that they can’t see their devotion to Jesus are just as rabidly fanatical.

It just seems that the entire anti-LGBT faction has gotten completely out of control and has become counter-productive to this country’s basic tenets, and raises more questions about its ethics and purported morals. You’ve got men and women who, despite all the hate and rhetoric directed at them, love their country enough that they’re willing to die to defend it. How can anyone rationalize not giving them the opportunity to defend that country because of who they sleep with? You’ve got millions of people who want to add more stability to the country by “legitimizing” their relationships and creating the standard family unit; how can that destroy it, especially when it's current state is in such horrible disrepair? How can a country founded on the ideals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness seriously think that creating laws to limit all three, for a large section of the population, be in that country’s best interest? Did we learn nothing from our country’s past when the nation treated African Americans and women of all races as second class citizens?

Sometimes i get really scared about our future. Thinking about Proposition 8 and the recent news on DADT, it seems like the steps we've taken towards freedom and equality can be undone at anytime; that those freedoms and rights are wholly contingent on how many democrats or republicans are sitting where...

Mallomarvelous

It's fall! Do you know what that means? Mallomar season is upon us!
it seems the magical cookie elves (no, not the Keebler elves...different elves...migrant elves...possibly Mexican or South American) have harvested, boxed and shipped the delightful little chocolate covered parcels of joy to our local supermarkets.
did you not know they were seasonal? me neither, 'til about 2 years ago when CawfeeMate and i went into King Kullen looking for a box to satisfy my genetically predisposed addiction* to them and the manager told me that they weren't "in season" and then suggested the (apparently hot house grown) Pinwheels** or Whippets, instead. But, to paraphrase My Cousing Vinny, no self-respecting Mallomar fan would ever settle for a Pinwheel or a Whippet. It's like Oreos vs Hydrox, Boar's Head vs Oscar Meyer bologna, or Kylie vs Dannii Minogue; a pale imitation of true quality which rarely satisfies.
anyway, relish these fall and winter months, my friends, and indulge.if you've never tried a Mallomar, i suggest picking up a box and savoring the just-picked and always fresh taste. afterward, i'll meet you at Costco to stock up for the off-season.

*my dad is a Mallomars fiend and has been known to (happily) receive boxes of them for Christmas and his birthday, which luckily fall during prime Mallomars season. Strangely, neither my mom, nor my husband understand the allure...
** which are so not Mallomars that i can't even find a good link for you

Oh, and if you like the picture, up top, you can get it on a shirt here

Conversation of the Day

CawfeeGuy: Holy crap, did you here what they found in Africa?
CawfeeMate: something about a fossil, right?
CG: Yeah! They're calling it the "missing link"! this is great!
CM: Eh. it'll be disproved before the week is over.
CG: Whattayamean?
CM: babe, they can't "prove" evolution.
CG: Why?!?
CM: the Pope would absolutely lose his shit.

i dunno if anyone else finds this nearly as funny as i do; probably not.
it's that a) CM used that phrase which is not a CM kinda phrase and b) it's the image of the pope going nuts over a 45,000,000 year old fossil and calling it evil. i've been chuckling for the last hour over it...

Briefly: Word Rules

Remember, when you were a kid, you learned that there were certain rules in grammar ("i before e...") and for every rule there were certain exceptions ("...except after c or when sounding like a, as in neighbor and weigh"). they were drilled into your head in the 1st or 2nd grade and then hammered in every so often.

one of the most basic rules, though was pluralization of nouns. if there's more than one of something you stick an s on the end. granted there are certain words for which this does not apply, because they end in y which then becomes an i and s becomes es; you know how it goes. other exceptions are the words which, for whatever reason, don't change when you pluralize them ( ie. deer and moose) or become whole new words (ie. mice and geese).

Lately, though, i've noticed that the rules seem to have changed; the plural for octopus is no longer octopi, it's now octopuses. the plural for fish is no longer fish, it's fishes.

now, i know language is fluid and subject to change over the course of the ages, but when did this happen?

Put a Ring On It

the only Campbell's Soup post i neglected was the one with the title referenced above. long story short*, i woke up on Valentines' morning and found the hunkiest man with a steaming cup of coffee and a black velvet box with this baby inside:

*this is, most certainly, old news to almost all of you who read my blog, since most of you are also my friends on Facebook, but i just thought i'd brag anyway.

Musical Mondays

When the earth was still flat,
And the clouds made of fire,
And mountains stretched up to the sky,
Sometimes higher,
Folks roamed the earth
Like big rolling kegs.
They had two sets of arms.
They had two sets of legs.
They had two faces peering
Out of one giant head
So they could watch all around them
As they talked; while they read.
And they never knew nothing of love.
It was before the origin of love.

The origin of love

And there were three sexes then,
One that looked like two men
Glued up back to back,
Called the children of the sun.
And similar in shape and girth
Were the children of the earth.
They looked like two girls
Rolled up in one.
And the children of the moon
Were like a fork shoved on a spoon.
They were part sun, part earth
Part daughter, part son.

The origin of love

Now the gods grew quite scared
Of our strength and defiance
And Thor said,
"I'm gonna kill them all
With my hammer,
Like I killed the giants."
And Zeus said, "No,
You better let me
Use my lightening, like scissors,
Like I cut the legs off the whales
And dinosaurs into lizards."
Then he grabbed up some bolts
And he let out a laugh,
Said, "I'll split them right down the middle.
Gonna cut them right up in half."
And then storm clouds gathered above
Into great balls of fire

And then fire shot down
From the sky in bolts
Like shining blades
Of a knife.
And it ripped
Right through the flesh
Of the children of the sun
And the moon
And the earth.
And some Indian god
Sewed the wound up into a hole,
Pulled it round to our belly
To remind us of the price we pay.
And Osiris and the gods of the Nile
Gathered up a big storm
To blow a hurricane,
To scatter us away,
In a flood of wind and rain,
And a sea of tidal waves,
To wash us all away,
And if we don't behave
They'll cut us down again
And we'll be hopping round on one foot
And looking through one eye.

Last time I saw you
We had just split in two.
You were looking at me.
I was looking at you.
You had a way so familiar,
But I could not recognize,
Cause you had blood on your face;
I had blood in my eyes.
But I could swear by your expression
That the pain down in your soul
Was the same as the one down in mine.
That's the pain,
Cuts a straight line
Down through the heart;
We called it love.
So we wrapped our arms around each other,
Trying to shove ourselves back together.
We were making love,
Making love.
It was a cold dark evening,
Such a long time ago,
When by the mighty hand of Jove,
It was the sad story
How we became
Lonely two-legged creatures,
It's the story of
The origin of love.
That's the origin of love
