a Work Conundrum

i've now been offered the supervisor's position, in my department, three times.

it's quite a coup considering that i've only been here since 2004, and came into this job with no experience whatsoever. i know i'm well suited for the job (despite some minor deficiencies in operational know-how which could probably be overcome in a week's worth of training), and that it would eventually lead to further promotion, raises (taking the job now, however, would not come with a raise additional to the sizable one i received before christmas) and eventually a set of initials after my name. the problem is i have absolutely no desire to do the job.

taking the promotion would mean infinitely more stress, since i'd have a staff (with the exception of 2 people) of completely useless individuals under me (namely, Merlin and Dingbat). it would mean a minimum of 10 more hours a week, on top of the 50 i already put in. as i've mentioned before, i thoroughly dislike this industry; i find it soulless and empty. taking the promotion would also mean that i now consider this my career. i don't know if i'm ready to acknowledge that this is where i'm going to retire from.

i look at my supervisor's supervisor (Cunty) and i cringe; yes she's stunning and has a beautiful house and car, but she's miserable; with a bleeding ulcer, an almost non-existent personal life and two beautiful Yorkies whom she never sees. is that what i want?

1) You are not your supervisor's supervisor. So don't compare yourself.

2) You don't have to consider a promotion a career. Just, ... more money - and something that will look good a resume for the career you do want. Which, why aren't you persuing already?

3) Do you have to add 10 more hours in a week? Can you accept the job on the condition that you won't add 10 more hours a week? Also think of the benefits of actually getting the useless people to do the job "your way" from now on. They don't, write 'em up. Write 'em up 3X - they're gone.

I say, take the promotion & the money, and put together your resume to 'slowly' begin looking for a carrer that you DO want.

Take the money, you may as well, sounds like your miserable there anyway.

Oohhh....the BIG BOSS. Scary. Nothing wrong with kicking it up a notch and giving your head a real run for it's money. You're young, you have it all going for you. Go for it. You can always say "NO" later on. I'm at a point in life where I'm trying to say YES to every opportunity....open yourself up, avail yourself to every opporunity to learn and live.

I used to do student and career counseling at a university. I would often see students who had graduated and land their "dream" job, only to return sometime later and tell me they strongly disliked their work choice. They were caught up with the image of working for a big corp, the money, and material possessions, but were very unhappy. I always stressed to students to decide what would make them happy . . where they wanted to live (the city, beach, mountains, country, etc), how they wanted to dress every day (casual, suits, shorts & t shirts, etc) . . and then look for a job that they could enjoy and have the "real" lifestyle they wanted to live.

I followed my own advice, turning down great opportunities for higher paying jobs, but have lived where I wanted . . at the beach, and have the casual lifestyle that I enjoy the most. I have encountered so many people over the years that say they envy my choices. They have the same choices to make, but get trapped in their lifestyle and work. They key is to follow your own heart. Your life is what YOU make it, not what others think it should be for you.

Good Luck!
