CawfeeGuy: Hi, i just got a recorded call from UPS saying that my package, set for delivery tomorrow requires a signature; had i known, i'd probably be able to take off, but as it stands nobody will be there to sign for it.
Rock With Lips (at UPS): ok..?
CG: can i leave a note or something on the door to have the driver leave the package with a neighbor?
RwL: you can but there's no guarantee that the driver will.
CG: excuse me?
RwL: yeah...he's required to make delivery to your address, the 1st time.
CG: i understand that, but you only deliver during working hours, Monday thru Friday, and notify people that a package needs to be signed for the day before delivery.
RwL: ...and..?
CG: and this package is very important (to me). is there any way i can make sure he attempts to deliver it to a neighbor to sign for?
RwL: no.
CG: so what happens after he ignores the note i'm posting on the door?
RwL: the package will go back to the holding area.
CG: and their hours are..?
RwL: Monday thru Friday 9 to 7.
CG: Oh! so if i can get there before 7 i can pick up the package?
RwL: Well, the drivers usually return to the holding area by 7:30...so...
CG: so there's no way i'm getting this package before next week?
RwL: i really couldn't say.

IDEA: have the shipper change the delivery address to your work instead? They do this ALL THE TIME!
I usually tell people like "rock with lips" - I don't want your hollow, scripted apologies. I realize that you're useless and this isn't your problem, I'd like to speak to your manager now.
This usually works except with Time Warner Cable, they DO NOT CARE and will basically tell you that.
Watt: my commute home from work is an hour and a half by subway and bus...i'd rather not schlepp my Wii home that way.
Ryan: UPS makes TWC seem like customer service heaven.
Seriously. Do you live under a rock? Have you never gotten a package by mail before? You do not live in the middle of no where - where you can get a item worth hundreds of dollars dropped on your doorstep to be left unattended. What did you think was going to occur here?
OF COURSE have them deliver it to your work.
i live in such an incredibly "safe" neighborhood with disgustingly nice neighbors.
i expected them to leave it on the veranda/lenai/porch like they USUALLY do with the 500 Pampered Chef boxes we get a week.
I'd try neighbors or a friend who can come and sit at your place tomorrow. A note has always worked for me. Leave a note WITH your signature on it. And maybe even your phone number. Ugh.
I hate UPS - and I'm not choosing the h-word there lightly - with a passion, they suck.
If a company is too cheap to use FedEx, to hell with 'em.
it's been a long day
